Parents & Baby

Mermaid Swim Academy’s Parent & Baby classes are designed for both Parent & Baby to become relaxed in and around water from a young age.

In classes designed for babies between 6 & 24mths lessons will cover:

  • Teaching aquatic awareness for both Parent & Baby
  • The classes assist parents in teaching their own child to explore and become confident and comfortable in the water.
  • Blowing bubbles, kicking, paddling through the water, jumping, floating and submerging. These skills begin to form the fundamentals of swimming
  • Activities such as playing & singing which assist both parent & baby in learning to enjoy their time in the water

In classes designed for older babies (18-26mths) lessons will apply the principles above in addition to:

  • Greater interaction with the teacher so as they begin to rely less on parents for guidance.
  • The classes are designed to introduce more advanced stages of learn to swim.

When can my baby commence lessons?

Mermaid Swim Academy offers classes for Parent & Baby from 6months of age. Between the ages of 6 to 12 months a baby learns to be aware and confident in an aquatic environment. As a child grows to become a toddler, the interactions in the water become more focused towards specific swimming skills.

How many babies will be in the class?

In each class there will be a maximum of 6.

We like to keep the number of babies small so that parent and baby have more interaction with the teacher and progress faster throughout the duration of the term.

What must I bring for my baby?

  • Aqua nappy - please no ordinary nappies – these can explode with water saturation, get heavy, and don’t contain accidents
  • Wetsuit – The Icebergs Pool is an ocean pool and therefore not heated. We recommend Surf Culture (insert link to website) in Bondi Junction as they carry a full range of baby and children’s wetsuits
  • Sunhat/sunscreen – please try not to put too much sunscreen on your child’s body as it can make them very slippery in the water
  • Warm dry clothes for after their lesson
  • Something to eat (we all get hungry after a swim)

What must I bring for myself?

  • As you will be in the water also, please wear an old T-shirt or rash vest for lesson activities (wetsuits are optional for adults)
  • Hat/sunscreen – remember to wipe your hands of any residue to avoid slippery hands & babies
  • Warm change of clothes
  • Coffee money!

When do lessons run?

The Mermaid Swim Academy commences Parent & Baby Classes in November right through until late April.

How much is pool entry?

Pool entry is NOT included in lesson fees. Adult pool entry of $5 applies for Parent & Baby classes – multipasses are available from the Icebergs front desk to avoid the hassle of rummaging for change each week.

If I can’t make a lesson are make up lessons available?

Mermaid Swim Academy has a "no makeup" policy. However, if there is the off chance there is a space available in another class we would be happy to offer this to you.

Will lessons be cancelled in adverse weather?

Lessons will always go ahead in the rain – we are going to get wet anyway! If in doubt, please turn up!

Should there be a threat of lightening or severe tidal movement, we will determine whether the lesson needs to be cancelled and endeavor to reschedule this lesson within the current term, or offer each student a make up class.
