Learn to swim levels (BLTS, ALTS, SD)

What must I bring for my child?

  • Wetsuit – The Icebergs Pool is an ocean pool and therefore not heated. We recommend Surf Culture in Bondi Junction as they carry a full range of baby and children’s wetsuits.
  • Swimming cap & goggles
  • Warm dry clothes for after their lesson
  • Something to eat (we all get hungry after a swim)

When do lessons run?

The Mermaid Swim Academy commences Learn To Swim Classes from October right through until May.

How long do lessons go for?

All levels of Learn To Swim lessons run for 30 minutes

Where is the Icebergs Pool?

The Icebergs Pool is located on Notts Ave, South Bondi.

How much is pool entry?

Pool entry is separate to swimming fees.

If I can’t make a lesson are make up lessons available?

Mermaid Swim Academy has a no make up policy. However, if there is the off chance there is a space available in another class we would be able to offer this to you.

Will lessons be cancelled in adverse weather?

Lessons will always go ahead in the rain – we are going to get wet anyway!

Should there be a threat of lightening or severe tidal movement, we will determine whether the lesson needs to be cancelled and endeavor to reschedule this lesson within the current term, or offer each student a make up class.

 

Junior Squads (Mini, Development, Advanced Development)

What do we need to bring?

- Silicon Swimming Cap
- Goggles (no 2nd hand ones please!)
- Toggs (ie swimming suit!)
- Wetsuit—steamers are better but spring suits are fine as well. Surf Culture are still our preferred surf wear shop and they’ll order your size within a couple of days if not in stock! 40 Bronte Road Bondi Junction 9389 5477. Make sure you mention Mermaids’ name so they know you’re needing your wettie for swimming lessons!!
- Long swimming fins for Development & Junior Squad (essential!!). No short fins please!!!

How long do lessons go for?

Mini Squad runs for 45 minutes. They are held in the small pool with a teacher in the water

Development & Junior Squads run for 60 minutes. They are held in the 50m pool with a coach on pool side.

Is pool entry included?

Pool entry is separate to swimming fees.

Pool entry fees for children over the age of 2 years is $4.50, or child 25 visit passes $85. Spectator entry is $3, alternatively opt for a coffee at the Crabbe Hole for free entry!! Please note that should you wish to sit and watch your child at poolside you will required to pay the Spectators fee of $3. If you desire to use the pool &/or sauna adult pool entry of $6.50 applies. (Parent & Babies classes – $6.50 adult entry applies only or purchase adult 25 multi-visit passes for $130).

Adults

How much are private lessons & the Stroke Correction Course?

You can find all prices by selecting BOOK NOW button in the blue section of the right side of the page. The book now button will send you through our term dates, times and prices.

When are lessons held?

Private lessons can be arranged at a time that suits you.

Stroke Correction Courses are held on Wednesday mornings from 5.45-7am and/or Saturdays at 12.30-1.30pm.

Adult Squad sessions are Monday mornings at 6am & Wednesday 6am.

Adult Surf Sessions are held at 6.30am (Surf Swim), meeting outside North Bondi Surf Club.

Do I need a wetsuit?

The Icebergs is not a heated pool, and if you feel the cold it is suggested that you do wear a wetsuit.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring swimming cap, goggles and if you are not a strong swimmer a pair of swimming fins.

Is pool entry included in lesson fees?

No. Pool entry is separate.

 

Surf Sports Nipper Camps

When do the surf camps take place?

All Surf Sport Nipper Training camps take place during school holidays throughout the year. The next weekly holiday camps take place in the 2014 April School Holidays at Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club at Bronte Beach.

NOTE: Training Camps run for 4 days (Monday to Thursday)

How long do the training camps run for?

The camps run for 4 days, Monday – Thursday. When enrolling for the week, you have the following options:

  • 4 Full days: 9am – 4pm
  • 4 Half Days: either in the morning session (9am – 12pm) or the afternoon session (1 – 4pm)

Where do we meet?

All sessions run out of Bronte Surf Life Saving Club at the northern end of Bronte Beach. Participants meet 15 minutes prior to the start of the session at the Bronte Surf Club.

Do parents need to be there for the duration of the lesson?

No, throughout the duration of sessions, adequate water safety is provided in accordance with SLSA’s coaching and water safety guidelines and insurance requirements.

NOTE: Children MUST be collected at the time the session concludes – i.e. 12pm OR 4pm

However, parents are encouraged to be waiting outside Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club 5- 10 minutes prior to the end of the session their child is concluding.

Does my child have to be a member of a surf club?

No, the Training camps are designed to cater for all levels and abilities – Nipper members or not!

Does my child have to have their own board?

No, for all board paddling sessions boards will be provided, however children can bring their own foam nipper boards.
